Take a stroll down memory lane
The photographs on this page were taken from the Colwill School Archives which were collated by Mrs Joan Gaskill (foundation administrator) and foundation teacher Mr John Munro. They cover the construction process which began in November, 1977, the first day (23 May, 1979) and a variety of early school events.
Below is an article which appeared in the Western Leader the term prior to opening: School with no name
A new primary school opens in east Massey next term, but as yet the school has to find a name. The school is near Colwill Rd and the newly elected school committee is now approaching parents and householders for suggestions for a name.
Ideas so far include Seaview, Colwill and Kintara.
Another problem facing the committee is access to the school from Royal Rd, a route which many pupils will want to follow. The matter is being discussed with the Waitemata City Council.
Mr Ian Gray has been appointed the school’s first Principal.
Because of a slight delay the school will not open to pupils for the first two days of the next term. Enrolments will take place on Friday, May 18, and pupils will attend the school on Wednesday, May 23.
The school committee elected includes: Chairman Brian Kirkman, secretary Michelle Maconaghie, Treasurer Eric Gaskell, committee Cyril Clayton, Bruce Cropper, Margaret Crow, Juliette Dorman, Pat Line. Jim Wheeler.
