Pohutukawa Whanau

Welcome from Room 22 (Years 0-2 with class teacher Rachel Sheary), Room 12 (Years 3-5 with class teacher Kate Phillips) and Room 23 (Years 6-8 with class teacher Paula Were). We are the Pohutukawa whanau.

As a whanau, team Pohutukawa students andteachers hold the school vision ‘Respectfully Colwill- Adventurous Risk Takers and Persistent Achievement’ at the forefront of all we do. Our Pohutukawa ‘family’ have lots planned to make achieving our goals fun and satisfying throughout 2012.

Our current topic is ‘Our Country, Our Place, Our History’.

To know where we come from helps us to understand where we are going.Setting goals helps us to reach our full potential. Our core belief is that a sense of family supports us and helps keep us safe to achieve our aims.

Currently the Pohutukawa team are studying ‘Our Country, Our Place, Our History’ in order to find out more about where our tupuna (ancestors) came from and where and how they lived on arrival in New Zealand. Children are also looking at how these Aucklanders kept themselves safe during times of strife. In order to investigate these ideas we will be visiting the Naval Museum and exploring the Maungauika (North Head) headland. Classes will carry out an archaeological dig and receive a talk from the Department of Conservation education officer about the importance of the marine life safe in the Waitemata Harbour. Children will also spend time mapping their West Auckland place/ home in relation to Maungauika, central Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.
